Cephalosporin antibiotics have been widely used by orthopedic surgeons, and new cephalosporin antibiotics will continue to be discovered as old forms are found to lose effectiveness.
A Cefirad¢ç, the third-generation cephalbsporin, has known a wide spectrum ranging from gram-positive to gram-negative bacteria, and its action is bactericidal.
Authors treated 28 patients, who had surgical procedure of musculoskeletal injury, with this newly developed drug and its efficacy of postoprative infection and adverse effects.
The results were as follows:
1. In prophylactic use, the efficacy of the Cefirad¢ç alone was 91.7% (11 cases / 12 cases).
2. In therapeutic use, the efficacy of the Cefirad / G-M was 87.5% (14 cases/ 16 cases).
3. The efficacy of prophylactic and therapeutic use of the Cefirad was 89.3% (25 cases / 28
cases).
4. No any side effects were noted except a eosinophilia.
Through this study, Cefirad is found to be safe and to have excellent prophylactic and therapeutic effect for postoperative infection in orthopedic surgery.
